President’s Message: The Northern California Bluegrass Society In 2010

A new year of bluegrass music and fun will keep Northern California Bluegrass Society volunteers busy planning events for their friends every week throughout 2010. Along with all the regular jams, concerts, workshops and gatherings, we hope you will join us for at least 6 festivals:

FEBRUARY: The San Francisco Bluegrass & Old Time Festival (since 2000) will be held February 12-21 at venues throughout San Francisco and the East Bay. As the name implies, this event is split evenly between bluegrass and old time music.

MARCH: Bluegrass On Broadway (since 2008), a festival celebrating the art of bluegrass music, will be held March 11-14 at venues in historic downtown Redwood City. The FREE event includes the nation’s only juried bluegrass documentary film festival, the nation’s only bluegrass book author symposium, the Northern California Bluegrass Awards ceremony, and plenty of live bluegrass music shows.

MAY: The Santa Cruz Bluegrass Fair (since 1987) is a FREE day of music in the park on May 1 that celebrates “May — Bluegrass Month” and the kick-off of the outdoor bluegrass festival season.

AUGUST: The Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival (since 1994) is a three-day showcase of top California-based bluegrass bands and hot jamming in Tres Pinos August 13-15.

SEPTEMBER: Jake’s Brown Barn Bluegrass Festival (since 2006) honors California Bluegrass Pioneer Jake Quesenberry with traditional bluegrass music in San Martin during early September.

SEPTEMBER: The Johnson Farm Pickin’ Party (since 1991) is a FREE enjoyable afternoon of jamming at a beautiful farm in Boulder Creek.

At least two other festival events are in the planning stages for 2010, including the Brookdale Bluegrass Festival (since 1999) and the revival of a charming bluegrass community gathering in a small Northern California town. More fun to come!

Thanks to all the hard-working committee members and other volunteers who make it all happen.
