The big Northern California bluegrass events this weekend will take place in New York City and Bakersfield.

The monthly East Village roots music variety program Steam Powered Hour will host a band contest for “bluegrassy” bands on Saturday, January 10 at the Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe, 236 East 3rd Street, New York, NY. The prize: a booking at the 2010 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco.

The California Bluegrass Association remembers the late, great (and much missed) Supergrass with the annual Great 48 Hour Jam at the Doubletree Hotel in Bakersfield. The January 8-9 event gets rolling early this year with a warm-up jam on Thursday evening.

We don’t know if any Bay Area bands or fans are headed for the Big Apple, but lots of NCBS folks will be jamming in Bakersfield this weekend. Others will be enjoying smaller jams, gigs and other musical gatherings closer to home. Get all the details on the NCBS website calendar (right column).
