Northern California Bluegrass Society Members will be heading both North and South for bluegrass events in elegant circumstances this weekend. Plus, there is fun close to home as well.

River City Music Festival, Red Lion On The River, Portland, OR. , January 7-9. This renamed event (it was the “River City Bluegrass Festival”) returns after a year’s hiatus to recover from the economic downturn and will welcome many Bay Area bluegrass fans and bands.

CBA 48-Hour Jam, Doubletree Hotel, Bakersfield, January 7-8. The non-stop picking party follows a Thursday concert by The Brombies. NCBS will host an official jam suite filled with Northern California Bluegrass Society jammers and their friends.

Lower key and closer to home, the new NCBS Santa Clara Depot Jam will take place on Saturday, the 8th of January, from 12:30pm to 3:30pm at the historic Santa Clara Depot, 105 Railroad Avenue, Santa Clara. This jam happens on the Second Saturdays and Fourth Tuesdays.

There is also a new open jam at the Seaside High School Music Room, 2200 Noche Buena, Seaside, hosted by (Chuck Hurdley) churdley (at) comcast (dot) net, on Second and Fourth Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm. The next jam will be on January 11.

Update: We have just learned that Ramblin’ Jack Elliott will perform at the last concert at the Noe Valley Ministry, 1021 Sanchez St, San Francisco, before the longtime acoustic music venue closes for two years of much needed renovations. The concert is Saturday evening, January 8. The music series will continue at a new venue for the NCBS San Francisco Bluegrass & Old Time Festival in February.

There is even more bluegrass fun this weekend. Check the NCBS Web Calendar (right column) for ideas.
