NCBS Performer, Benefactor Warren Hellman Honored By “Hellman’s Hollow” Designation
The San Francisco Parks & Recreation Commission has honored frequent NCBS performer and benefactor Warren Hellman by designating the site of the main stage of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass as “Hellman’s Hollow.” The Golden Gate Park site had previously been known as Speedway Meadow. A new park monument commemorates the Hellman Hollow name.
Hellman is the leader and banjo player of the San Francisco bluegrass/old-time band The Wronglers, which has performed multiple times at Northern California Bluegrass Society festivals, including the Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival and the San Francisco Bluegrass & Old Time Festival.
Frederick Warren Hellman is best known as the organizer of the internationally-recognized Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival held each October. He is retired from the San Francisco investment banking firm Hellman & Friedman and is a well-known San Francisco philanthropist through the San Francisco Foundation and the Hellman Family Foundation. He is a graduate of the University of California and the Harvard Business School.
