For fans of the Stanley Brothers, George Shuffler’s name is well known. As the lead guitarist in the band , George was one of the pioneers of the cross-picking guitar style. James Alan Shelton has considered George Shuffler one of his mentors and is now the lead guitarist for Ralph Stanley’s band. While George was substituting for Jack Cooke on bass during one of the band’s tours, the two guitarists shared rooms and tunes on the tour and their friendship forged a desire for a duo album. The two guitarists play through a collection of 13 tunes with an emphasis on melody. There are no breakneck speed leads with a challenge to play more notes faster and faster. The listener is invited to sit back and enjoy the sounds of two guitars playing together and weaving a tapestry of wonderful tunes. There are traditional songs such as “Banks of the Ohio,” “Katy Dear” and “Nobody’s Business.” Two Bill Monroe tunes, “True Life Blues,” and “No Letter in the Mail,” are included as well as country songs from Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. James Shelton does a solo medley of Carter Family songs and George solos on “Nobody’s Business” and on his own composition, “Old Leather.” For flatpick guitar fans, this album would be a welcome addition to a collection of classic performances.
