Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival

Our largest event, the Good Old Fashioned has been held each summer since 1994. It features three wonderful days of California bands on the main stage, as well as hot campground pickers on the side stage between main acts. The GOF is also legendary among festival fans for both the quality and quantity of campground jamming.

The festival takes place on the second weekend in August at Bolado Park, just south of Hollister.  There is a tree-filled, shady campground for tent camping and a spacious meadow for RVs. The weather in August is typically comfortably warm during the day, with nights that range from mild to cold (pack layers!) The GOF is kid friendly, with a Kids on Stage program for budding bluegrass musicians and a wonderfull volunteer-staffed crafts and activities corrall next to the audience area.

Please note that there are absolutely no dogs or pets of any kind permitted at Bolado Park, except for service dogs, which must be in uniform at all times.  Any ticketholders or volunteers who arrive with a pet will not be allowed to enter the festival grounds. To avoid unpleasantness and enjoy your festival, please respect this policy and make other arrangements for your pet.

Fun with YouTube

I recently stumbled across some familiar faces on YouTube. Nancy Zuniga from the CBA has posted a ton of live clips from many recent campouts and festivals. Some are stage performances, others are campground jams. Here are just a few that feature some of our Northern California Bluegrass Awards nominees:

Johnny Campbell and Friends (Yoseff Tucker, Nina Weisman, Haley Pexton, John Cogdill) jam on “Southern Flavor“.

Eddie DuCommun and Diana Donnelly sing “Ruby’s Song” in the campground at Plymouth.

AJ Lee sings “Cabin on a Mountain” backed by Marty Varner, Nate Schwartz, and Max Schwartz.

The Mighty Crows play “Highway 52” at the 2008 GOF.

You can find the full list of Nancy’s videos here. Got other favorite local band videos? Leave a comment and let us know.

Official GOF Tee Shirt Design Contest

This year, the NCBS Good Old Fashioned Festival t-shirt design will be chosen in a contest, and you are invited to enter! GOF T-shirt Chair Leslie Billings has the details:

Our esteemed festival committee in their great wisdom has decided to sponsor a contest for the design of our 2009 tee shirt. We are looking for something pretty, interesting, and attractive enough that festival goers can enjoy wearing our tee shirts long after Yodeling Lady Lolita has sent us off into the sunset to eagerly await another year at our fabulous family festival.

The Astonishingly Excellent Prize Package will be: Good Old Fashioned 2009 Festival Tickets for 2 adults and their children, plus a free tee shirt for the person with the winning design. The winner will be awarded a Special Certificate acknowledging their achievement of being our first shirt design contest winner.

Contest Rules

  1. The competition is open to everyone, NCBS membership is not required.
  2. No art skills are necessary; creativity and originality are the goals. Any and all
designs submitted will be considered. If someone has a good idea, but limited
ability to draw, no problem. We can always adjust your draft for printing.
  3. It would be really nice, but not a requirement to win, if the design could reflect
that the Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival is about California Bluegrass.
  4. We are especially hoping for drawings from children. If your kids can hold a
pencil or crayon, turn them loose, and who knows? Your child could be the next Bluegrass Picasso!
  5. Drawings must be on plain, white, non glossy 8 1⁄2 by 11” paper.
  6. The name of the artist, and age and grade if under age 18, must be written on the back side of the paper. This is so the judges can be impartial in their considerations.
  7. Designs can be in one, two, or three colors. It is OK to use pencils, pens, markers, water colors, ink, or crayons.
  8. All entries must be postmarked by March 17, 2009 (St. Patrick’s Day).
The winner will be announced on May 5th, 2009 (Cinco de Mayo).

Send all entries to Leslie, who will submit them to the Festival Committee after the deadline. We regret that we will be unable to return any submissions, due to the cost and time factors that would involve.

Good luck everyone, we are excited about seeing your ideas!
