The event will be held at the Native Revival Nursery in Aptos near Santa Cruz.

The glorious day of fall bluegrass will once again be welcomed by the Northern California Bluegrass Society. Thanks for your support!

Brown Barn Festival Ends After 8 Years, Honored Jake Quesenberry

The Brown Barn Bluegrass Festival in Gilroy, founded by the late Jake Quesenberry 8 years ago and continued in his honor by the Quesenberry Family and the area bluegrass community including NCBS, enjoyed a fun final weekend October 11-13 and will not return.

Thanks to Doug and Leslie Franklin, The Music Medics, the Northern California Bluegrass Society, Redwood Bluegrass Associates, the California Bluegrass Association, Sue Quesenberry, Carl Pagter, Snap Jackson, Lynn Ludewig  & Nancie Barker for helping with the small, outdoor-season-ending event.

NCBS will continue to present these NCBS-owned and NCBS-welcomed festivals in 2014 & beyond:

January: NCBS Presents Bluegrass On Broadway (January 23-26, 2014, Redwood City).

February: NCBS Presents The San Francisco Bluegrass & Old Time Festival (on hiatus in 2014, will return in 2015).

March: Brookdale Bluegrass Presents The Brookdale Bluegrass Festival At Costanoa (March 5-9, Pescadero) (NCBS-welcomed).

April: (Bluegrass festival TBA in Napa Valley)

May: NCBS/SCBS Presents The Santa Cruz Bluegrass Fair (May 3, Santa Cruz).

August: NCBS Presents The Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival (August 7-10, Tres Pinos).

Fun: The Brown Barn Bluegrass Festival is now 8 years old.  Small, fun, and easy, this is a good way to enjoy bluegrass music with your bluegrass friends as our Northern California outdoor festival season comes to a close. The festival is welcomed by the Northern California Bluegrass Society and is a memorial to festival founder and visionary bluegrass icon — the late Jake Quesenberry. This year, there will be a memorial jam for the late Shirley Tudor.

Camping: Festival camping begins Friday at Noon, October 11 and ends on Sunday evening, October 13.  Free dry camping is included in your multi-day ticket donation. Dogs on a leash are allowed in camp, but not in the audience area.

Sound: Professional sound by Dave Neilsen.

Directions: Gilroy is south of San Jose. Take the  Masten Exit from Highway 101 and go west a short distance. Turn left (south) just past the railroad tracks on Monterey Road and go a short distance to the first left (east), Rucker Avenue and cross the tracks. The Franklin Ranch is on the right.

Services and Supplies: Bring chairs. Food will be available from the BBQ by the volunteers from E. Clampus Vitus onsite throughout the festival. Gas, food stores, restaurants, and more are available a short distance north on Monterey Road in Morgan Hill, or south on Monterey Road in Gilroy.

New Band The Sisters Grim Will Debut At Brown Barn This Weekend

Angelica Grim, Christine Grim, T.J. Doerfel, and Joe Ash have formed a new band, The Sisters Grim, which will debut at the NCBS-welcomed Brown Barn Bluegrass Festival this weekend in Gilroy.

Angelica Grim was one of the key performers early in the festival’s history, but has missed a few years while she and her husband T.J. lived in Key West, FL. The couple returned to California a few weeks ago and now Angelica returns to the Brown Barn. The festival was begun by the late Jake Quesenberry and was continued by his family as a memorial to his bluegrass legacy.

The Music Medics provide the Franklin Ranch festival venue. The charity makes healing music available for seriously ill hospital and hospice patients. The festival is supported by the Northern California Bluegrass SocietyRedwood Bluegrass Associates, and E. Clampus Vitas.

Professional sound will be provided by Dave Nielsen.

The weekend of great stage and campground music will conclude the outdoor camping festival season for Northern California. There will be plenty of tickets at the gate and plenty of available on-site camping.

The weekend forecast calls for perfect California fall weather.

Three days of great stage and campground music will conclude the outdoor weekend camping festival season for Northern California. There will be plenty of tickets at the gate and plenty of available on-site camping.
