Molly Tuttle Awarded First Hazel Dickens Memorial Scholarship, Will Celebrate At Brown Barn Saturday

Molly Tuttle

Molly Tuttle

The Foundation For Bluegrass Music has awarded its first Hazel Dickens Memorial Scholarship honoring the West Virginia/Baltimore/DC area songwriter, singer, guitarist, feminist, and activist who died earlier this year.

The recipient is Molly Tuttle of Palo Alto, CA., an NCBS member, songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist, who will attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston beginning in January, 2012. The scholarship was awarded in a special ceremony on September 30 in Nashville.

Molly Tuttle, of The Tuttles With A. J. Lee, will perform this weekend at the NCBS Jake’s Brown Barn Bluegrass Festival in Gilroy. She attended Palo Alto High School and is currently a student at Foothill College. She is the daughter of Jack Tuttle and Maureen Roddy. She was inspired to pursue bluegrass and folk music as a career while listening to the recordings of Hazel Dickens while in junior high school. Tuttle became an international musical YouTube star during her high school years, and has played with her family band in California and at the International Bluegrass Music Association World Of Bluegrass over the past six years. She plans to pursue a full time music career after college.

Molly was named Best Guitar Player and her band Best Bluegrass Band at the 2011 Northern California Bluegrass Awards.

The Foundation For Bluegrass Music (Nashville, TN), which was organized in 2007 at the suggestion of past NCBS president Michael Hall, is a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation that is a sister organization to the International Bluegrass Music Association, a trade organization. The Foundation uses tax-advantaged gifts to promote educational and other charitable goals of the international bluegrass music community.
