Mike McKinley Retires From Bluegrass Fair; Ona Stewart Is New Organizer

Mike McKinley

Mike McKinley

Longtime NCBS/SCBS volunteer Mike McKinley has retired from organizing the Santa Cruz Bluegrass Fair, which he founded in 1986. The beloved rite of spring began as a celebration of “May — Worldwide Bluegrass Month” and (with bluegrass month moving to September) now continues as the kick-off event for the summer outdoor festival season in Northern California.

Michigan native and longtime Santa Cruzian McKinley and his new wife Lisa Palvides are now residents of Austin, TX (a fine music town!). He is a past Northern California Bluegrass Society President and served many years on the Board of Directors. He has been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Northern California Bluegrass Awards. In addition to directing the Society’s annual bluegrass fair on the first Saturday of May, he also organized the 25th Anniversary Party for the Society in 2007, performed frequently at the Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival, hosted the NCBS Volunteer Party, and wrote for Bluegrass By The Bay magazine.

McKinley’s band The Harmony Grits has been a fixture on the Santa Cruz bluegrass scene and at the Strawberry Music Festivals near Yosemite for over three decades, and was the band that introduced then UC-Santa Cruz student Gillian Welch to bluegrass music at an on-campus gig. Mandolinist McKinley continues to travel from Texas to California on a regular basis to perform with the Grits at venues such as the San Gregorio General Store and area festivals.

Ona Stewart

Ona Stewart

The new NCBS/SCBS volunteer in charge of the bluegrass fair is Ona Stewart, the leader of the Santa Cruz band The Naked Bootleggers. He was born in Ben Lomond, was a football star at Lincoln High School in San Jose, and now lives in Bonny Doon. After early work in fine art restoration, followed by many years in telecommunications, he has just launched a new venture in organic food, Farm To Table Certified, that will provide information about organic restaurants nationwide.

Ona Stewart (”Ona” is an old family name) lives with his wife Corina and children Irie, Ona, and Asha. Before he got into bluegrass and alt-bluegrass music, he performed with a 10-piece circus jazz band called Horchata. In the Bootleggers, he plays both guitar and washboard. He got into bluegrass through listening to The Stanley Brothers and looks forward to growing the local bluegrass scene.

The 2014 Santa Cruz Bluegrass Fair will be held at the Duck Pond Stage in San Lorenzo Park on Saturday, May 3, Noon-6:00pm. Both The Harmony Grits and The Naked Bootleggers will perform. Also on the FREE program: Bean Creek, The Lampel Brothers With Jim Lewin, and the Eddie Duccomun Band.
