Druha Trava
Czechgrass, an acoustic fusion of bluegrass, folk, and rock
Friday, 25th September, 2009. 8pm $15/$17

We are very excited to see the return of our old friends, Druha Trava (Czech for 'Second Grass'), back after a number of years absence! The winners of numerous Czech Music awards, DT gained additional renown earlier this year when they were chosen to play at Prague Castle during President Obama's visit there in April. NPR covered the show and raved about their versions of Dylan songs from the groups 2007 “Dylanovsky” CD.

A virtuoso instrumental group with a charismatic lead singer, DT perform acoustic music with strong bluegrass, folk, rock, and jazz influences. They use a basically bluegrass line-up of guitar, dobro, bass, mandolin and banjo, though you will see the banjo player pick up a clarinet and Irish whistles. You will also hear them playing Bob Dylan and possibly the overture from Smetana's opera The Bartered Bride transcribed for guitar and banjo! Robert Krestan (lead vocals, mandolin, guitar) and Lubos Malina (banjo) founded the group in 1991 after years in a famous Czech folk group, Poutnici. Robert has also published books of poetry and short stories and translated several American novels into Czech.  Lubos, originally a classical clarinet player, has been voted best Czech banjo player many times, and has a decidedly Bela Fleck style.  Lubos Novotny is a virtuoso dobro player who crosses musical boundaries and has been Czech dobro player of the year many times. Emil Formanek, from the Slovak Republic, joined the group as lead guitarist in 2004, having formerly been with the bluegrass band Fragment. Petr Sury is a double bassist who manages to combine the roles of classical playing in the Opera Orchestra of the National Theatre and keeping the beat for Druha Trava.

Keith Greeninger
Singer-songwriter, folk, Americana
Saturday, 26th September, 8pm, $15/$17

Keith Greeninger, from Santa Cruz, is deservedly probably the best known singer-songwriter in the Americana/folk genre in the Bay Area. Whether solo with just his guitar, or with his varied companions up to a full band, his live performance is always a treat. From quiet and sensitive to dynamic and raucous, his shows usually end up as party time for all. In addition to performing his own material, he is equally at home with traditional folk and upbeat Americana. He has won many, many songwriting awards over the last 20 years, the latest being the Telluride Festival Troubadour National Songwriting competition in 2005. He has released 3 successful solo CDs in the last few years, and before that was part of the well-known Santa Cruz based folk group “City Folk”.

Though Keith always had the talent to be a full-time musician, he chose instead to use his skills as a carpenter to support his wide travels and further his commitment to humanity and justice. During the 80's he helped build houses and schools in Nicaragua for displaced victims of the Contra war. In the 90's he was asked to start a unique music and wilderness festival, The Gathering at Island Lake, set in the high Canadian Rockies. Keith has played for Fiddling Cricket a number of times before, but not since we left Espresso garden as a venue. Its very nice to get him back again.

“Greeninger's rich sound fits nicely in the West Coast acoustic tradition…he also writes penetrating songs of social insight that do not fit comfortably in a corporate dominated world.” —– Wallace Baine, Santa Cruz Sentinel
