ASHA Sponsors Radio Series On The Topic Of The Voice

(Rockville, MD – April 6, 2010) The subject of the voice is not discussed very
ften but that is about to change. To help promote the work of speech-language
athologists (SLPs) who work in the field of voice, the American
peech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is sponsoring three broadcasts of the
an Francisco Bay Area’s new vocal music public radio series “VoiceBox” on KALW
1.7 FM.
ASHA member and voice expert Dr. Sarah Schneider, CCC-SLP, of the University of
alifornia, San Francisco, will join VoiceBox host and producer Chloe Veltman
or the first pre-taped broadcast, which will air on April 16 at 10:00 p.m. PST.
he theme is “The Aging Voice: How Voices Change Over Time.” Subjects for the
econd broadcast will be health issues faced by professional singers and the
iggest myths associated with care of the voice. For the third, how the latest
rends in speech and voice therapy are changing the lives of people around the
orld will be discussed. The dates of these additional broadcasts are yet to be

SLPs are uniquely qualified to help people with voice issues. Schneider will
ring her wealth of information and expertise to all three broadcasts and
rovide listeners with resources and tips to help protect and heal their voice.

f aging? How can voices improve over time? These are just a few questions that
ill be answered during the first show. Also discussed will be the careers of
amous singers whose voices perceptibly changed during the course of their
ives, ways in which their voices deteriorated or improved with age or simply
ltered, and techniques singers use to maintain their vocal health as they age.
The April 16 broadcast coincides with World Voice Day, an annual event
ecognized by voice health professionals worldwide.
