New Johnny Campbell & The Bluegrass Drifters Album

Former Santa Cruz residents Johnny Campbell and Whitney (Belvin) Campbell, now of Nashville, are working on a new Johnny Campbell & The Bluegrass Drifters album, using Kickstarter for funding. We mention this only because JC is now the only known bluegrass star with his very own bobblehead (and, oh, because they need the money).

Cuzin’ Al Knoth Led New Yale President, Bluegrass Bandleader To Bluegrass In 1970s

Yale University

Yale University

Peter Salovey was officially inaugurated earlier today as the new president of Yale University, New Haven, CT. Since 1990, he has led a Yale-based band, The Professors Of Bluegrass (New CD: “Pick Or Perish”).

The Deadly Gentlemen and the Professors Of Bluegrass will perform this weekend at Yale as part of the celebration.

Dr. Salovey also serves as the chair of the Board of Trustees of the International Bluegrass Music Museum in Owensboro, KY.

kfat-logoHis path into bluegrass will sound familiar to many Northern California Bluegrass Society members — he listened to Cuzin’ Al’s Bluegrass Show, hosted by Al Knoth on Gilroy’s KFAT Radio while a Stanford undergraduate in the 1970s, then learned to play banjo and bass.

Dr. Savoy, who took over as Yale’s president on July 1st, is the third psychologist to hold that position.

His academic research pioneered the field of “emotional intelligence,” the theory that people have a wide range of measurable emotional skills, just as they have a wide range of intellectual abilities, both of which profoundly affect their thinking and actions.

Local Public & Community Radio Stations Present Bluegrass Music, Need Support

new-kkup-logo-2Local Public & Community Radio Stations support bluegrass music.  These stations reach every part of the Northern California area. This programming is largely supported by listener donations made during bluegrass pledge drives several times each year.

kzsuroundAbout 15-20 years ago, the amount of bluegrass music programming around the San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay Areas and the Central Valley dropped alarmingly as non-profit stations sought to maximize revenues by programming more “popular” music and other content. Since that time, bluegrass radio offerings have stabilized, largely due to strong financial support from bluegrass music lovers.

The NCBS website Radio Listings can help you find a radio show that meets your needs. If you have a show that you enjoy, please remember to send in a practical token of your support at pledge time.

kvmr-logoOn Saturday, September 14, 2013, KALW Radio in San Francisco will be raising funds to support Peter Thompson’s Bluegrass Signal program (6:30-8:00pm on Saturdays). This show has recently done specials about the Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival, the Brown Barn Bluegrass Festival, Bluegrass On Broadway, and the Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival, as well as programs on many other quality bluegrass topics of interest to NCBS Members and their friends.

kpfa-logokcss-logoSaturday’s KALW fund-raiser will offer a unique “thank-you” gift for donors — a CD of songs recorded by top area bluegrass bands. If you enjoy this show each week, this may be the pledge drive for you.

If not, a chance to support your favorite show will come around soon. Thanks for your support!
